Making your school water efficient - stage 2 & 3
Stage 2: Benchmarking current usage
Compare your current water consumption in m³ /pupil/year with the average figures of 7m³ /pupil/year for primary schools or 11m³/pupil/year for secondary schools.
Is your consumption higher than the average? It could be that water is being used overnight or when the school is closed, for example an uncontrolled urinal or leak on site.
Stage 3: Establishing a reduction target
The DCSF has identified the following as consumption benchmarks for schools to work towards:
- m³/pupil/year
- Primary school with pool - 4.3
- Primary school without pool - 3.8
- Secondary school with pool - 5.1
- Secondary school without pool - 3.9
Use these figures as a guide and set a target to work towards. Make the target realistic but not too easy; this will ensure those involved remain motivated throughout.
