Sam's water wise day - transcript

7.30am

On Saturday morning Sam the Water Wise kid woke up early. Someone was running a full bath and he knew he had to stop them! "Stop - take a shower instead!" he shouts. But it's too late...

8.00am

"I'll take a shower next time" says Dad. "I didn't realise that a full bath wasted so much water. Now let's hurry down to breakfast, we've got lots to do today!"

8.30am

"Mum, do you really need to keep the tap running? It's wasting a lot of water." Sam's Mum agrees. "Sorry Sam, I forgot. Thanks for being helpful."

9.30am

Sam helps Dad wash the car. He fills two buckets from the water butt in the garden and carries them to the car. Soon the car looks sparkling clean, and they didn't need to use the hose.

11.30am

The sun is shining. Sam's Dad wants to use the hose to water the garden. "But Dad, it's such a waste of water. Why don't you use a watering can? And anyway, it's far too hot - we should wait until it gets cooler so that the sun doesn't dry up all the water too soon."

2.30pm

Sam has gone swimming with his friends. Just because you're a Water Wise kid, doesn't mean you can't have fun in the water!

4.00pm

Sam's Mum is waiting for him. "Can you wash my kit now? I need it for the match tomorrow." Sam's Mum smiles. "I was just waiting for those clothes. Now I've got a full load for the washing machine."

7.30pm

"It's been a long day Sam. I'm glad we've got a Water Wise kid in the house - you've helped us save a lot of water today. Now why don't you run and have a bath...I mean a shower...before bed."

8.00pm

"I've read that four people living in a house can use over 500 litres of water a day. I wonder what we've used today? First of all there was Dad's big bath - that's 80 litres, then the washing up, about 15 litres, washing the car - 2 bucket fulls that's 10 litres... washing clothes that's about 65 litres, and watering the garden. That's nearly 200 litres not counting all the water we used for washing our teeth and flushing the toilet. And there's the dripping tap in the kitchen, that wastes a lot - I'll ask Dad to mend it tomorrow."
